January 15th & 16th, 2010

We left Cuzco about 1:30 in the afternoon and did not have too much trouble finding our way our of town. It's amazing how much effort just doing that can take sometimes.

Her is s view of Lake Titicaca which is the highest lake in the world. You can take their word for it or Google it. :-) You can tour a group of people who live on the lake. They have woven reeds into large platforms and live on them. We opted for skipping that.

As with many days we ran into road construction. This day was slightly different though.

Some of the roads we were on today were GREAT and some . . .

. . . had yet to be finished

Here older forms of transportation are being transformed

Roads sometimes run through grazing areas

OK so the road crew let us through the area where they were working. This is what it looks like in the area where they haven't gotten to yet. Thank you for letting us through but where do we go now?!?

At least there are road signs! (Ok this was the ONLY sign we ever saw!)

Pretty out here . . .

We did not see anyone else for over an hour. This seemed a LOT longer when you are in the middle of no where! We did finally manage to get back to pavement though when some folks living out in the middle of no where pointed the way. This was the best experience!

The one picture I only have in my mind is one of a horse galloping frantically towards me on the road. He was really running and looked crazed. He was dragging a twenty foot rope and had just escaped from somewhere. I stopped and hoped he wouldn't run me over as the road was very narrow in this area. Fortunately he veered off at the last second and I continued. Hope he is ok.

Here are some videos for those who like 'em.

We ended our riding day in Tasca which is a nice town near the border of Chile. We spent a pleasant evening walking about the town's center. People were out with Friends and families enjoying the pleasant weather and conversing. It seems like a nice thing to do each evening before going to dinner or home.

Tomorrow we cross it and start the Atacama Desert, "The Driest Place on Earth". Supposedly it is 50 times drier than Death Valley in the U.S. according to Wikipedia.

Hope you are happy and healthy and thank you for reading-John

John an awesome blog..Glad you went to south side of lake Titicca and passed thru desolation..Better off there than in some corurbanos..Hope you can find your way to and fro in the BSAS conurbano where you will have to watch your tankbags even if they are welded on, locked and secure.Jenna Bush had her purse snatched by a pungista and didn't even notice it even with secret service guys watching over her!!!
